“Food For Thought” by Leon Chan

For those of you with a sharp eye, you might have noticed that the layout has been slightly modified. Every post is now displayed on the front page from my weekly updates to longform essays. I’m also going to start including sketches to every post, so look forward to elementary school level artwork (see above). To differentiate between the posts, I’ve added the tag [Thoughts] to the weeklies. This tag is fitting because I share my thoughts on noteworthy finds throughout the week. It also represents the thoughts that you as the reader formulate after reading, watching, or hearing the pieces.

What I’ve Read:

Why Are Millennials So Obsessed With Food? | The Atlantic – This interview with author Eve Turow explores the relationship that people in their teens and twenties have with food. It involves certain buzzwords such as organic, microbrews, and non-GMO. The part of the article that resonates with me is the quote from Anthony Bourdain about why we take pictures of food. 90% of my Snapchat pictures are about food and I hate to admit it but it’s mostly to show off.

How it feels when white people shame your culture’s food – then made it trendy | Washington Post – This piece is about America’s disgust and fascination with Asian food. Although I share the same background and culture as the writer, I didn’t experience the same repulsion from my peers about my culture’s food. I believe this is due to the fact that I grew up in Hawaii with it’s special blend of ethnic diversity.
